Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

8.6K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

1.8K
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Drug Delivery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Chemotherapeutics often cause off-target toxicities due to non-specific distribution.
  • Nanoparticle (NP) formulations improve drug delivery but face challenges in penetrating solid tumors.
  • The tumor microenvironment presents significant barriers to effective NP delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the application of tumor-homing peptides for enhancing NP delivery to solid tumors.
  • To explore how these peptides overcome tumor microenvironmental barriers.
  • To assess the impact on therapeutic outcomes and reduced toxicity.

Main Methods:

  • Review of literature on tumor-homing peptides and NP delivery systems.
  • Analysis of peptide targeting mechanisms and tumor penetration strategies.
  • Evaluation of studies demonstrating improved tumor accumulation and therapeutic efficacy.

Main Results:

  • Tumor-homing peptides facilitate targeted NP accumulation in tumors by binding to specific molecular markers.
  • Tumor-penetrating peptides enhance NP extravasation and penetration into the tumor parenchyma.
  • Targeted delivery via peptides significantly reduces off-target effects compared to non-specific methods.

Conclusions:

  • Tumor-homing peptides are a promising strategy for improving the efficacy of NP-based cancer therapies.
  • Peptide-mediated delivery overcomes key challenges in reaching tumor cells deep within solid tumors.
  • This approach holds potential for enhanced treatment outcomes and reduced patient toxicity.
