Summary

Perforating the recipient bone site before grafting significantly enhances new bone formation in corticocancellous autogenous onlay grafts. This technique improves bone regeneration for alveolar ridge augmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if recipient site perforation affects bone neoformation in corticocancellous autogenous onlay grafts.
  • To compare bone regeneration in perforated versus unperforated recipient sites.

Main Methods:

  • A split-mouth study design was used with 8 patients undergoing horizontal alveolar ridge augmentation.
  • One side served as the test group (perforated recipient site), the other as the control (unperforated).
  • Histomorphometry was performed 6 months post-grafting to assess bone neoformation.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed bone neoformation.
  • The perforated recipient site group (TG) exhibited a statistically significant higher mean of newly formed bone (5.74%) compared to the unperforated control group (CG) (3.68%) (P=0.046).

Conclusions:

  • Perforation of the recipient bone site positively influences the bone neoformation process in autogenous bone grafts.
  • This technique shows promise for improving outcomes in alveolar bone augmentation procedures.
