Blinding01:11

Blinding

3.8K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Blind Procedures

13.0K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

Modeling in Therapy

384
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Effective self-presentation is a central component of social interaction and identity construction. It relies on the dynamic processes of defining the situation and engaging in self-disclosure. These mechanisms help individuals navigate social context expectations and manage how others perceive them, fostering mutual understanding and relationship development.Defining the SituationSocial situations are shaped by collectively understood frames—a set of widely understood rules or...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Education
  • Patient Safety
  • Interprofessional Collaboration

Background:

  • Speaking up is crucial for patient safety, especially in mixed-profession healthcare teams.
  • Individual motivation, particularly interprofessional identity (IPI), influences speaking up.
  • The relationship between IPI and speaking up, and the role of conversational topics, requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore if conversational topics trigger interprofessional identity (IPI).
  • To determine if triggered IPI influences speaking-up behavior in mixed-profession groups.
  • To assess how different conversational topics impact IPI and speaking up.

Main Methods:

  • Dental and dental hygiene students were categorized into strong or weak IPI groups using the Extended Professional Identity Scale (EPIS).
  • Small, mixed-profession groups discussed eight conversational topics in a simulation session.
  • The number of ideas generated per topic served as the measure for speaking up.

Main Results:

  • Groups with stronger IPI demonstrated significantly more speaking up compared to those with weaker IPI.
  • Certain conversational topics were found to trigger IPI to varying degrees, influencing the level of speaking up.

Conclusions:

  • Conversational topics can act as effective triggers for interprofessional identity (IPI), enhancing speaking-up behaviors.
  • Leveraging Extended Professional Identity Theory (EPIT) and targeted triggers in simulations can foster IPI and encourage speaking up.
  • Reflective debriefing post-simulation may further strengthen IPI and promote consistent speaking up.
