Health communication training improved recommendation materials slightly, but further enhancements are needed for effective public health communication. This study assessed training effectiveness using the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) checklist.
Area of Science:
- Health Communication
- Public Health
- Health Literacy
Background:
- Effective health communication materials are crucial for preventive services.
- Practitioner training in creating these materials is often insufficient.
- The Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) checklist can evaluate material effectiveness.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess if training improves health recommendation materials.
- To evaluate the impact of SAM-based training on public health insurers' materials.
- To identify specific areas of improvement in health communication materials.
Main Methods:
- Public health insurers in Tokyo received individual and group training.
- Training focused on improving recommendation materials for health checkups using SAM.
- Materials were evaluated by independent assessors before and after training.
Main Results:
- The mean suitability score increased from 48.6 to 51.6 post-training.
- While the overall increase was not statistically significant (p=0.09), specific improvements were noted.
- Significant enhancements were observed in essential information, titles/captions, layout, and spacing.
Conclusions:
- SAM-based training yielded limited improvements in health recommendation materials.
- More targeted training is necessary to create effective health communication materials.
- Improved materials can better encourage recipients to take health actions.
