Design of spliced dual-band reconfigurable metasurface for wireless communications and power transfer
Abstract:
With the development of the electronic industry, there is an urgent requirement for a multifunctional electronic information platform. This work presents a spliced reconfigurable metasurface with dual-band operations for multifunctional integration. By just loading a single PIN diode, the proposed metasurface unit is capable of operating in the low band (11.8 GHz) and high band (28.5 GHz) with 1-bit phase adjustment, and its central frequency span can reach to about 2.5 times, which provides more flexibility for dual-band design and applications. Based on this unit, we adopt sub-array splicing to assemble an ultra-large-scale metasurface array with over 3500 units. It can enhance wireless communication quality through beam scanning, and can also be used to focus power beams for wireless power transfer (WPT). The simulation and experimental results show that at both low band and high band, the designed metasurface can realize precise beam scanning and power focusing, which will serve the future applications such as intelligent perception, mm-wave communication, and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT).

The Maximum Power Transfer Theorem
The load connected draws the current, and the circuit delivers the power to the load. The alternating current flowing through the load is determined using the rectangular form of voltages, currents, network impedance, and load impedance. The average power delivered to the load is obtained from the product of the square of current and load resistance.
