Community Based Intervention

277
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.8K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Education

Background:

  • Weight-based stigma is a global psychosocial issue impacting adolescent mental and physical health.
  • School-based interventions show potential for reducing weight bias, but evidence on their real-world effectiveness is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a school-based intervention's effectiveness in reducing internalized weight stigma among Italian adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • 539 Italian secondary school students were randomized into an intervention group (n=330) or a control group (n=209).
  • The intervention included psychoeducational modules and cognitive dissonance theory activities.
  • Internalized weight bias and body dissatisfaction were assessed pre- and post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • A significant reduction in internalized weight bias was observed in students perceiving themselves as overweight post-intervention.
  • A marginally significant decrease in body dissatisfaction was noted in the intervention group.
  • No significant changes were observed in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive dissonance-based psychoeducational programs show promise for reducing adolescent internalized weight stigma.
  • Further research is needed to refine strategies and assess long-term impact.
