Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of the semi-automated Epistemonikos Evidence Matrix tool against traditional manual literature searches for identifying studies used in CPG development.

Main Methods:

  • Three CPGs (HIV/AIDS, pediatric asthma, stroke) were used for comparison.
  • A traditional search strategy (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library) with keywords and RCT filters was employed.
  • An Epistemonikos-based strategy utilized the Evidence Matrix tool, identifying studies common to multiple systematic reviews.

Main Results:

  • The traditional search identified 8,466 articles; Epistemonikos identified 6,771.
  • Relevant studies: 155 (1.8%) from traditional search vs. 103 (1.5%) from Epistemonikos (p=0.14).
  • Epistemonikos showed higher precision (94% vs. 78%, p<0.01) but lower sensitivity (58% vs. 88%, p<0.01).

Conclusions:

  • An evidence search strategy leveraging existing systematic reviews is an efficient and reliable alternative.
  • This approach aids in identifying relevant studies for evidence-based decision-making.
  • The semi-automated Epistemonikos Evidence Matrix tool demonstrates a valuable role in CPG development.
