Area of Science:

  • Food Science
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Health

Background:

  • Commercial honey quality is vital for human health.
  • Understanding elemental composition in honey is key to assessing its safety.
  • Previous research has not fully explored the elemental variations in commercial honey based on production methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the levels of various elements in commercial honey samples.
  • To determine the impact of production processes on honey's elemental composition.
  • To provide data for safeguarding human health through informed honey consumption and production.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 13 commercial honey samples for elemental content (Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zn, Sr, Pb).
  • Statistical analysis including Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's simultaneous test and Fisher's pairwise comparison.
  • Homogeneity of variances test performed at an alpha level of 0.05 using Minitab software.

Main Results:

  • Significant variations in elemental levels (Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zn, Sr, Pb) were observed across different honey samples.
  • Elemental concentration ranges were established for each analyzed element.
  • Production processes were found to influence the elemental profile of honey.

Conclusions:

  • Elemental composition of commercial honey varies depending on its production origin and methods.
  • Honey producers must carefully select apiary locations to control elemental content.
  • Quantifying these elements is essential for ensuring honey's safety for human consumption.
