Genomic In Situ Hybridization (GISH) has emerged as a powerful cytogenetics tool in a successful interspecific hybridization program. GISH enables the visualization and identification of parental genomes in hybrid progeny. Using total genomic DNA as probes, GISH facilitates the detection of chromosomal rearrangements, introgressions, and genome composition in hybrids. This technique has been instrumental in assessing the success of interspecific hybridization, monitoring genome stability, and characterizing novel hybrid genomes. GISH has far-reaching implications for plant breeding programs, facilitating the development of new crop varieties.
