Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

1.8K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Influence of Earth's Curvature and Atmospheric Refraction on Leveling

879
During leveling, the Earth's curvature and atmospheric refraction introduce deviations in the line of sight from a true horizontal reference. When the line of sight is leveled, it remains perpendicular to the plumb line only at a single point. Beyond this, it deviates due to the Earth’s curvature, represented by the correction C. For a sight distance D, the deviation can be derived using the relationship:This relationship shows that the deviation increases quadratically with distance. Over a...

Sight Distance in a Vertical Curve01:29

Sight Distance in a Vertical Curve

320
Sight distance on vertical curves is critical in roadway design. It ensures drivers can see far enough ahead to identify and respond to hazards effectively. This directly impacts safety, driver comfort, and the overall efficiency of the transportation network.Vertical curves are classified into crest and sag curves based on their geometry. For crest curves, sight distance is determined by the line of sight between a driver's eye and a small object on the road's surface. Design parameters for...

Curvilinear Motion: Rectangular Components

1.1K
Curvilinear motion characterizes the movement of a particle or object along a curved path, notably evident when envisioning a car navigating a winding road. If the car starts at point A, its position vector is established within a fixed frame of reference, where the ratio of the position vector to its magnitude signifies the unit vector pointing in the position vector's direction.
As the car advances, its position evolves over time. Quantifying the car's velocity involves computing the...

    Area of Science:

    • Human-Computer Interaction
    • Virtual Reality User Experience
    • Visual Attention Mechanisms

    Background:

    • Consumer-grade virtual reality (VR) devices and authoring tools are increasing accessibility for non-expert VR experience creators.
    • Guiding user attention in immersive VR environments remains a significant design challenge due to the freedom of exploration.
    • Existing techniques for attention guidance may impact user immersion and well-being.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce and evaluate WarpVision, a novel technique for subtly guiding user attention in virtual reality using spatial curvature.
    • To compare the effectiveness of WarpVision against the state-of-the-art attention guidance technique, Deadeye.
    • To assess the impact of WarpVision on user search times, immersion, and well-being.

    Main Methods:

    • WarpVision was developed, employing spatial distortion around points of interest to alter object size, form, and location.
    • A within-subjects user study was conducted, comparing WarpVision (at four intensities) with Deadeye in visual search tasks across two VR environments.
    • User performance (search time), immersion disruption, and self-reported well-being were measured.

    Main Results:

    • WarpVision significantly reduced visual search times compared to Deadeye.
    • Both WarpVision and Deadeye exhibited comparable levels of immersion disruption.
    • WarpVision reported a lower impact on user well-being than Deadeye.

    Conclusions:

    • WarpVision is an effective technique for guiding user attention in virtual reality, outperforming Deadeye in search efficiency.
    • The spatial curvature method offers a promising approach to attention guidance in VR with minimal negative impact on user experience.
    • WarpVision presents a viable alternative for designers aiming to enhance user focus in VR without compromising user well-being.
