Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). Summary

Transgender identities in Syria are framed as threats through dehumanizing language and religious condemnation. This study reveals how online discourse reinforces gender hierarchies and justifies exclusion.

Post-Assad Syria presents a complex socio-political environment.
The rise of social media influences public discourse and identity formation.
Understanding the representation of marginalized groups is crucial for social justice.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the discursive construction of transgender identities in post-Assad Syria.
To investigate the linguistic strategies used to marginalize transgender individuals online.
To explore the role of social media in reinforcing gender hierarchies.

Main Methods:

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of 550 Facebook comments.
Analysis focused on responses to a viral video depicting violence against a transgender individual.
Examination of language used to portray transgender people as deviant, threatening, or transgressors.

Main Results:

Transgender individuals are predominantly depicted as moral deviants, political threats, and religious transgressors.
Exclusion is rationalized through dehumanization, religious condemnation, and securitized language.
Linguistic strategies include disease metaphors, Quranic narratives, and nationalist rhetoric framing gender nonconformity as foreign.

Conclusions:

Language functions as a tool for social control, legitimizing exclusion and violence against transgender individuals.
Counter-discourses advocating for rights and medicalization are systemically suppressed.
The study contributes to understanding digital moral policing and the reinforcement of gender hierarchies in the MENA region.
