Background:
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing is transforming orthopedic practices, enabling personalized treatment, enhanced surgical precision, and innovative prosthetic development.
Objective:
This review investigates how AI and 3D printing technologies are revolutionizing orthopedic care by improving patient outcomes, facilitating advanced clinical practices, and offering novel solutions for complex challenges.
Methods:
The review synthesizes current literature and practical applications of AI and 3D printing in orthopedics, focusing on key areas such as joint replacements, spinal surgeries, fracture management, and prosthetics design.
Results:
AI enhances imaging, diagnostics, and treatment planning through data-driven decision-making, while 3D printing allows for the creation of patient-specific implants, surgical tools, and ventilated plaster casts. These innovations collectively reduce risks, accelerate recovery, and improve overall patient care. Additionally, sustainable practices like using recycled polymers in 3D printing are highlighted.
Challenges:
Key challenges include high costs, limitations in biocompatible materials, data privacy concerns, and the lack of standardized regulatory frameworks.
Conclusion:
Despite challenges, advancements in AI, materials science, and adaptive manufacturing processes show a promising future for the integration of these technologies in orthopedics. Interdisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, engineers, and AI specialists is essential to overcome existing barriers and expand their application, ultimately leading to precision-based, patient-centered care.
