Cationic Hosts with Preorganized Conformation for Anion Recognition

Abstract:
A tetracationic macrocycle and a hexacationic cage bearing four and six pyridinium units, respectively, were synthesized via an SN2 reaction in a one-pot manner. Both of these hosts have relatively rigid frameworks, containing several relatively acidic CH protons pointing inward. These hosts can recognize various anions such as chloride, bromide, iodide, and sulfate by leveraging a combination of hydrogen bonding and Coulombic attraction. Generally, the cage demonstrates enhanced association constants relative to the macrocycle, which has fewer binding sites.
