[Retrospective analysis of aggressive assaults and coercive measures in hospitalised refugee patients]

To investigate the occurrence of aggressive behaviour and coercive measures during in-patient treatment of refugee patients.Retrospective analysis of admissions to the Isar-Amper-Klinikum Region Munich in the years 2018 and 2019. Refugee patients were identified by health insurance status.N=21,947 patients were admitted, of whom N=555 were refugees. Aggressive behaviour was significantly more common among refugees. After adjusting for age, gender, and diagnosis in a regression model, refugees did not have an increased risk. However, they were significantly more likely to be restrained or secluded. Many refugee patients had significant language problems.Aggressive behaviour among refugee patients is more likely to be due to their sociodemographic characteristics than to their refugee status. Language barriers could contribute to the high rates of coercive measures.
