Offensive efficiency and traditional positional roles in Hungarian basketball: an empirical analysis

This study explores the evolving offensive roles in professional basketball, focusing on the 2021/22 season of the Hungarian men's NB I/A championship. The primary aim is to analyze shifts in traditional positional responsibilities and compare offensive efficiency among Hungarian-educated players, import players, and young Hungarian (U23) players.

A quantitative research design was applied to assess offensive performance across 239 player profiles, using official league statistics. Offensive efficiency was evaluated through multiple shooting efficiency metrics. Statistical analysis was conducted with IBM SPSS Statistics version 28.0, using ANOVA to detect significant differences among the groups.

Inside players showed higher shooting efficiency than positional averages. Import players consistently recorded the highest values across the analyzed indicators, followed by Hungarian-educated and U23 players. Notably, both domestic groups demonstrated the ability to take offensive responsibility, especially in decision-making situations such as passing to open teammates-often import players-who successfully completed possessions.

The findings suggest a shift in the function of traditional offensive positions, underscoring the superior efficiency of import players. Nonetheless, the active involvement of domestic players highlights developmental potential. These results support the need for increased investment in talent identification and development to strengthen domestic player performance and long-term competitiveness.
