Dental bone grafting biomaterials from marine seaweeds - a three-decade history

The purpose of this narrative review is to assess the uses and efficacy of Algipore^®, a phycogenic hydroxyapatite (derived from calcareous marine seaweeds), in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The study's main objective is to ascertain the biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and resorption properties of Algipore by examining data from numerous in vivo, in vitro, and clinical investigations.

A thorough analysis of forty-three published research works carried out between 1988 and 2024 was discussed. The efficacy of Algipore in treating periodontal defects, elevating the floor of the maxillary sinus, and maintaining the alveolar ridge was evaluated in these investigations using a combination of in vitro tests, clinical trials, and in vivo research. To assess Algipore in comparison to alternative bone substitute materials, comparative investigations were performed.

According to the research, Algipore have a high degree of biocompatibility, which fosters advantageous osteoconductive qualities and gradual resorption. Their adaptability to a variety of dental and maxillofacial applications is facilitated by these features. Prolonged follow-up investigations showed consistent results, such as high implant survival rates, supporting the safety of Algipore in clinical settings.

Algipore plays an important in contemporary regenerative dentistry and dental implantology. Their osteoconductivity, biocompatibility, and consistent resorption profile render them a highly advantageous choice for dental professionals. The consistent success observed in long-term studies further supports their use in treating periodontal defects, elevating the maxillary sinus floor, and preserving the alveolar ridge.
