A Rare Case of Hyperhemolytic Syndrome During Pregnancy
Background:
Hyperhemolytic syndrome (HS) is a rare and fatal complication of blood transfusion. This is the first reported case of HS in a Chinese pregnant woman.
Methods:
Here, we report a case of HS in a 22-year-old pregnant Chinese woman with β-thalassemia.
Results:
All red blood cell alloantibody screens, including RBC eluate, were negative; however, the patient had se-vere hemolytic transfusion reactions. She was diagnosed with HS, and her newborn was delivered at 36 weeks and was discharged with a good prognosis.
Conclusions:
This is the first reported case of HS in a Chinese pregnant woman, highlighting the need for further research in the Chinese population. Our successful perinatal management can provide clinical guidance for pregnant women with limited treatment options.
