Abstract:
Emerging contaminants are receiving increasing concern due to their bioaccumulation, environmental persistence, and potential ecological and human health risks. The monitoring of emerging contaminants in the environment has great significance for assessing their ecological risks and human exposure risks. Passive sampling technology has attracted extensive attention because of its unique advantages, such as convenience and economy. Recently, some scholars have attempted to apply it in the field of monitoring emerging contaminants. This paper reviews the research progress of passive sampling technology and the passive sampler for emerging contaminants in the atmosphere, water, soil, and sediment in terms of environmental monitoring. Moreover, the application developments of individual portable passive sampling technology for emerging contaminants are documented. It is noted that the wearable passive sampler can monitor individual exposure to emerging contaminants more accurately and conveniently. In the future, research on passive sampling technology for emerging contaminants will focus on the research and development of sampling materials, the design of new passive samplers, and the expansion of new types of pollutant monitoring and application scenarios. With the increasing public concern about individual environmental health and exposure risks, passive sampling technology will play a more important role in the national effort to control emerging contaminants.
