Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis primarily focuses on socio-communicative deficits and repetitive behaviors.
Sensory-motor dysfunctions, including impaired postural control and visual processing, are common in individuals with ASD.
Understanding the interplay between visual behavior and motor control is crucial for a comprehensive view of ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize existing evidence on the relationship between visual behavior and postural control in children and adolescents diagnosed with ASD.
To identify gaps and limitations in current research concerning vision and posture in ASD.
To provide a foundation for future research directions in this specialized area.

Main Methods:

A scoping review methodology was employed, adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
The review was registered on the Open Science Framework and systematically searched across multiple databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science).
Inclusion criteria were broad, encompassing primary studies of any design, without restrictions on time, geography, setting, or language.

Main Results:

The initial search identified 646 articles, with only 14 studies meeting the full inclusion criteria for the review.
Evidence linking visual behavior and postural control in children and adolescents with ASD is notably scarce.
The findings from the included studies are often contrasting, attributed to significant methodological heterogeneity.

Conclusions:

Current research on the relationship between vision and posture in ASD populations is limited and lacks consistency.
Heterogeneity in study methodologies and sample characteristics hinders the ability to draw generalizable conclusions.
Future research requires rigorous designs and objective, population-specific outcome measures to advance understanding of these sensory-motor links in ASD.
