Epilepsy in Paracelsus: A historical analysis of his medical perspective

Abstract:
This article presents a comprehensive analysis of epilepsy in the thought of Paracelsus (1493/1494-1541), offering the first monographic study of his views on its causes, manifestations, classification, and treatment. Drawing on key texts from the 1520s and 1530s, including Vom fallend, Vom fallenden Siechtagen, and Von den hinfallenden Siechtagen, the study reconstructs his conceptualization of epilepsy within his broader medical, philosophical, and cosmological framework. Paracelsus challenged the Galenic tradition by declaring epilepsy curable, identifying chemical causes, and advocating astro-medical interventions grounded in the influence of celestial bodies. He classified epilepsy among the five main mental illnesses and differentiated five organ-based epilepsy types, each with specific clinical and prognostic implications. His attention to seizure semiology, anatomical localization, and chronobiology anticipated aspects of modern epileptology. Paracelsus also recognized the risk of seizure-related death-an insight largely ignored until the twentieth century. Beyond medical theory, Paracelsus linked epilepsy to universal natural forces, describing it as both a human and cosmic phenomenon. He emphasized the physician's ethical duty and argued that compassion was essential to true medical practice. Paracelsus' vision of epilepsy reveals a unique synthesis of empirical observation, alchemical thought, and spiritual insight, positioning him as a forerunner of modern neurology and a physician deeply attuned to the unity of nature, body, and cosmos.
