Introduction:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global concern. Several studies have analyzed teaching methodologies and medical students' behavior regarding AMR.
Materials And Methods:
We conducted a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study (from April 1 to May 31, 2024) to assess perceptions, skills, and educational methodologies regarding AMR among advanced students and recent medical school graduates in Argentina, using a Google Forms® questionnaire. Knowledge, specific training, perception of the problem, and teaching methodologies were investigated. Clinical cases were included to assess the application of knowledge in therapeutic decisions.
Results:
A total of 551 respondents participated. More than 85% considered AMR to be a major problem in human health, but less than 50% perceived it in the same way in animal and environmental settings. Theoretical concepts were better understood, while practical aspects, such as treatment duration, antibiogram interpretation, and dose adjustment, were less valued. Only 55.9% indicated that their faculty used digital tools, although 63.1% used them on their own initiative, preferring videos and tutorials (76.7%). Sixty percent answered correctly about the duration of treatment for cystitis and 65% about the appropriate antimicrobial for community-acquired pneumonia.
Discussion:
The study highlights weaknesses and opportunities in AMR education in medical schools. It emphasizes the need to redesign academic programs and incorporate technological strategies to enhance practical skills and boost confidence in antimicrobial prescription.
