Primary cervical spinal cord intramedullary spindle cell melanoma: A rare case report

Background:
Primary melanoma of the spinal cord is an extremely rare tumor. Only about less than 70 cases have been reported till date.
Case Description:
Our case is a 40-year-old male patient who presented with complaints of progressive right upper and lower limb weakness for the past 6 months. Radiology revealed an intramedullary lesion at C5-C6 level with proximal and distal syrinx. The patient underwent gross total excision of the tumor. The histopathological findings were suggestive of spindle cell melanoma. Post-operative whole body positron emission tomography - computed tomography imaging, dermatological and ophthalmological evaluation ruled out any similar lesions elsewhere.
Conclusion:
Rarity of primary cervical intramedullary spindle cell melanoma and gross total excision with good surgical outcome prompted us to report this case.
