[Role of corticosteroids in the treatment of anaphylaxis]

Anaphylaxis is a severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction presenting with a wide range of symptoms. Prompt recognition is essential, as delayed treatment increases the risk of mortality. Adrenaline is the only therapy that has been proven to limit progression and reduce mortality in anaphylactic reactions. Despite being recommended as the first-line treatment in international guidelines, adrenaline remains widely underused, likely due to a poor recognition of anaphylaxis and unfounded fears about side effects. By contrast, corticosteroids are frequently administered, while the evidence seems weaker. This article reviews the evidence on the use of corticosteroids to treat anaphylaxis.
