Drug Interactions:
THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING. Smoking causes or exacerbates many diseases (cardiovascular, respiratory, infectious, autoimmune, cancers, etc.), but it can also interfere with the effectiveness of prescribed treatments. Nicotine can counteract their effect, and the polycyclic hydrocarbons present in smoke can alter the metabolism of many drugs. By activating the hepatic enzyme system, they accelerate the elimination of molecules and thus reduce their therapeutic action. Dosage adjustments and monitoring are necessary. Informing patients about these interactions can encourage them to change their smoking status.
