Assessing Retention in Vascular Shunt Placement Among General Surgery Residents: A Swine Model Study

Objective:
The objective of the study was to assess the retention of vascular shunt placement among general surgery residents on an animal model (sus scrofa swine).
Design:
The study was a prospective observational performance-based assessment.
Setting:
The study was performed at the 59th Medical Wing in Lackland Air Force Base.
Participants:
The participants (n = 5) were academic military general surgery residents in their senior level of training. Participants were asked to join the study voluntarily.
Results:
Surgery residents had faster shunt placement at 6 months when compared to initial assessment pre-education (p = 0.04). When comparing shunt placement 6 months post assessment to the initial assessment post-education, resident physicians were slower. (p = 0.01).
Conclusions:
Education improves proficiency and retention in vascular shunt placement.
