A Make-Use Loop-Through-Loop Technique of Meniscal Root Repair: A Controlled Reduction and Traction Method

Abstract:
The menisci play an important role in knee stability and uniform distribution of load across the knee joint. The posterior and anterior roots anchor the meniscus to the tibia. A complete root tear results in meniscal extrusion and loss of normal meniscus function, predisposing the knee to early degenerative changes. During surgical repair, a proper amount of traction force is necessary at the meniscus-suture interface. A loose construct cannot maintain the contact of the root to bone, whereas a tight construct predisposes to a cheese-wire effect. The aim of this technical note is to describe a modification of the transtibial suture pullout technique that uses a sliding knot so that a desired amount of reduction and traction can be applied to the root.
