Communication experiences of nursing students with hospitalized children: A qualitative study

Background:
Effective communication with hospitalized children is a critical skill for nursing students, yet it presents unique challenges due to the developmental, emotional, and psychological needs of children. This qualitative study explores the experiences of nursing students in communicating with hospitalized children, highlighting their perceptions, challenges, and strategies for improvement.
Methods:
Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 24 nursing students who had completed the pediatric nursing unit until data saturation and analyzed using content analysis.
Findings:
The findings revealed two keys themes such as "the communication facilitators," and "the communication barriers;" and a number of themes and sub-themes.
Conclusion:
This study emphasizes the importance of integrating child-centered communication skills into nursing education and addressing environmental and organizational challenges.
Implications To Practice:
Integrating child-centered communication training into undergraduate nursing curricula and clinical mentorship can foster students' confidence, empathy, and competence in pediatric interactions. Strengthening supportive and reflective learning environments through simulation- based experiences and guided practice may enhance the quality, safety, and family-centeredness of pediatric nursing care.
