Abstract:
Ocular diseases represent a significant global health challenge, affecting millions and often leading to severe visual impairment or blindness. The advent of advanced molecular techniques has revolutionized ophthalmology, offering critical insights into disease mechanisms. This review highlights recent advancements in molecular approaches for analyzing ocular diseases. A major breakthrough includes the integration of next-generation sequencing technologies, single-cell analysis, and spatial transcriptomics. These methodologies provide high-resolution profiling, unveiling cellular heterogeneity and spatially resolved transcriptional landscapes associated with various ocular disorders. These insights enhance our understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms underlying ocular diseases. Furthermore, molecular biomarkers such as proteins, metabolites and non-coding RNAs (microRNAs) have demonstrated potential for non-invasive diagnostics and disease monitoring. The identification and characterization of these biomarkers have been significantly enhanced by technologies such as flow cytometry, mass spectrometry (MS), metabolomics. These cutting-edge tools enable precise molecular mapping of ocular tissues, facilitating early detection and the development of targeted therapies. Harnessing these molecular approaches paves the way for personalized medicine in ophthalmology, ultimately improving patient outcomes and preserving vision.
