Diversion of medication among college students with ADHD: A brief report
1Special Education, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA.
Abstract:
College students with ADHD have been known to divert the use of their medication by either selling, exchanging, or sharing their medication with others, typically peers. The purpose of the current study was to examine the variables associated with the diversion of medication among college students with ADHD. A national data set of college students with ADHD from the Healthy Minds Study was examined. First, it was found that stimulant misuse was significantly associated with the diversion of medication among college students with ADHD. Second, several variables were found to be associated with the diversion of medication among college students with ADHD in addition to misuse. Identification of these variables associated with diversion can better help screen students who may be likely to engage in this behavior, which in turn may lead to intervention. Future research would develop screening beyond demographic variables, which serve as a starting point.
