Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.8K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

458
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.9K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

43.5K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Strategies of Self-Presentation III: Self-Monitoring

188
Self-monitoring is a central construct in understanding individual differences in self-presentation strategies across social contexts. It refers to how individuals observe, regulate, and control their expressive behavior and self-presentation following situational cues. Self-monitoring reflects a person's sensitivity to social appropriateness and willingness to adapt behavior to fit varying interpersonal demands.High vs. Low Self-Monitoring IndividualsIndividuals high in self-monitoring are...

Summary

Problematic internet use in adolescents is linked to factors like male sex, older age, high screen time, and gaming. These predictors help identify at-risk youth for targeted digital-health interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Digital Health
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Problematic internet use (PIU) in adolescents is associated with negative outcomes in mental health, academics, and social functioning.
  • Limited research exists on PIU among adolescents in Eastern Europe.
  • Understanding PIU is crucial for developing effective public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate demographic and behavioral predictors of problematic internet use among adolescents in Romania.
  • To identify high-risk profiles for PIU in an Eastern European context.
  • To inform the development of targeted interventions for adolescent PIU.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 308 adolescents (aged 15-18) in a Romanian high school.
  • Data were collected using a demographic/behavioral questionnaire and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT).
  • Multivariable linear regression analysis was employed to identify significant predictors of IAT scores.

Main Results:

  • Older male adolescents, those with higher daily screen time, and those who primarily gamed online reported higher IAT scores.
  • Prior attempts to reduce internet use were also associated with higher problematic internet use.
  • The final model explained 43% of the variance in problematic internet use.

Conclusions:

  • Demographic and behavioral factors significantly predict adolescent problematic internet use.
  • Specific profiles, including older males with high screen time and a gaming focus, are at higher risk.
  • Findings support implementing school-based screening and digital-health interventions in underrepresented regions.
