Autism Spectrum Disorder

956
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) necessitates lifelong, multidisciplinary healthcare planning.
  • Aging in individuals with ASD presents unique challenges requiring specialized assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a scoping review of existing research on scales used to detect aging signs in people with ASD.
  • To synthesize the main assessment tools applicable to the aging population with ASD.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across major databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, NICE, Cochrane) from January 2003 to August 2025.
  • Utilized the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal and extraction checklist for assessment.
  • Screened 820 papers, with 24 meeting the inclusion criteria.

Main Results:

  • Identified 57 tools related to Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) domains.
  • Tools covered functional (19), mental (18), biomedical (6), social (1), frailty (2), fall risk (1), and quality of life (10) domains.
  • No single multi-domain tool was identified for assessing aging in ASD.

Conclusions:

  • A need exists for a comprehensive, multi-domain assessment tool for aging in autistic individuals.
  • Development of such a tool would enable tailored Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA).
  • This facilitates personalized care planning for the aging ASD population.
