Abstract:
Environmental exposures, encompassing a range of physical, chemical, and psychosocial factors, can influence brain health throughout life. However, the interactions between these exposures and the neurobiology of mental health and neurological diseases remain poorly understood. This review first analyzes common biological pathways through which these exposures affect brain health, offering a comprehensive perspective on their collective impact. Specific effects on mental health and neurological disorders are examined, highlighting consistent findings and underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Importantly, advanced computational neuroscience strategies are explored to establish a methodology framework for analyzing multimodal environmental data. This framework includes modules for data collection and analysis, designed to enhance exposure assessment accuracy and facilitate longitudinal studies that reveal unique susceptibility patterns. It also allows for the examination of interactions among environmental, genetic, and imaging factors related to brain health. These findings highlight the importance of a holistic approach to public health policy, advocating for the integration of environmental health considerations into effective interventions designed to reduce risks to brain health.
