Purpose:
This study aims to enhance and analyze the patient conversion rate from the outpatient department (OPD) to the inpatient department (IPD) in tertiary care hospitals. The study focuses on understanding the factors influencing patients' decisions to decline inpatient admissions despite medical recommendations.
Methods:
A prospective descriptive research design was used to study a sample of 251 patients who visited the OPD. Both qualitative (patient questionnaires) and quantitative data (admission rate tracking) were collected. Pareto and Root Cause analyses were used to identify the main reasons for patient refusal, and a Chi-squared test was used to evaluate the statistical significance of these factors.
Results:
The primary reasons for declining inpatient admission included a preference for medical treatment over surgical interventions (21.7%), seeking second opinions (20%), financial concerns (13.9%), and long waiting times for consultations and test results (12.1%). The Chi-squared test indicated that these factors were statistically significant, with a P value less than 0.05, highlighting their impact on the decision-making process.
Conclusion:
Addressing the key reasons for refusal-medical treatment preference, second opinions, financial constraints, and operational inefficiencies-can significantly improve patient conversion rates from OPD to IPD. Hospitals should focus on improving patient education, communication, financial counseling, and operational efficiency to enhance the transition process and patient satisfaction.
