Global research trends in anticipatory grief associated with incurable diseases: A bibliometric analysis (2001-2024)

This study examined the characteristics, research hotspots, and trends in anticipatory grief (AG) associated with incurable diseases. A total of 257 relevant publications were analyzed from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The research volume on this topic has consistently increased in recent years. Liew, Tau Ming, was the most prolific author with nine publications, while Death Studies led in publication count and co-citations. The majority of contributions originated from the United States (n = 74), with four of the most productive institutions also based in the U.S. Current research is predominantly concentrated in the areas of neurology and oncology, with a focus on the relationship between anticipatory grief and complicated grief, as well as its implications for palliative care practices. Future research is likely to explore themes such as the psychological well-being of family caregivers, their perspectives on care, and the role of advance care planning.
