Abstract:
Surgical care in austere environments, e.g. created by natural disasters or conflict, faces significant challenges due to resource scarcity and infrastructure damage. Earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and heat waves result in surges of illness and injury patterns, such as crush syndrome, waterborne disease, or burns, straining health systems. Triage protocols, like Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment, can help prioritize care during mass casualty incidents. Planning an training for resource-scarce environments is essential, as is developing a robust and agile surgical communication and staffing plan to support surgical care delivery in dynamic environments. These strategies enhance care delivery and management of acute injuries in austere settings.
