Imaging Studies I: CT and MRI

1.3K
Introduction: MRI and CT scans are crucial advancements in medical imaging techniques, playing a vital role in diagnosing conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Each scan serves distinct purposes, targets specific areas, and requires unique nursing duties.
Description of the Procedures
Computed Tomography (CT) scan:
Computed Tomography (CT) scans use X-ray technology to generate detailed images of bones, organs, and tissues. During the scan, the patient lies on a moving table...

Area of Science:

  • Oncologic Imaging
  • Radiomics and Machine Learning
  • Spinal Tumors

Background:

  • Distinguishing spinal osteosarcoma from chondrosarcoma is challenging.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a radiomics fusion model using CT and MRI for differentiating spinal osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma.
  • To compare the diagnostic performance of models based on different imaging modalities.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 63 patients with spinal osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma.
  • Extraction of radiomics features from CT and MRI sequences.
  • Development and evaluation of eight machine learning models, including CT, MR, combined CT-MR, and clinico-CT-MR.

Main Results:

  • The MRI-based radiomics model achieved the highest diagnostic performance (AUC=0.963), significantly outperforming CT-based models and radiologists.
  • Combined CT-MR and clinico-CT-MR models did not significantly improve diagnostic accuracy over the MR model.
  • The MR model demonstrated excellent calibration and clinical utility.

Conclusions:

  • MRI-based radiomics is highly effective for preoperative discrimination between spinal osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma.
  • This clinically practical tool can support preoperative diagnosis using routine MRI.
  • Facilitates timely and informed treatment decisions for spinal tumors.
