Splenectomy is not a direct cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The primary risk for HCC in cirrhotic patients stems from underlying liver disease, not spleen removal. Further research is needed.
Area of Science:
- Hepatology
- Surgical Oncology
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Splenectomy is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver cirrhosis.
- The direct carcinogenic role of splenectomy in HCC development is debated.
- Existing evidence is largely from retrospective studies lacking robust clinical trials.
