Reframing bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease: the mixed blessing of slow and variable movement

Purpose:
Conventional treatments for bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD) can enhance motor function but often do not fully restore it to baseline levels. An adjunctive intervention could entail reframing bradykinesia to foster a more positive orientation toward this symptom. This paper aims to conceptualize the context-dependent benefits of this intervention.
Method:
This Perspective draws on analytical thinking and synthesis of ideas from literature across medicine, psychology, and philosophy. It discusses the theoretical basis and evidence for developing a positive reframing of bradykinesia, based on potential adaptive benefits.
Results:
While bradykinesia poses undeniable challenges, it may foster greater attention and adaptability by encouraging individuals to engage with its slower and variable pace. Such reframing may support safer, more intentional task execution and promote improved communication, alternative approaches to exercise, and creative problem-solving.
Conclusions:
Reframing slower movement and related movement patterns as potential resources in certain contexts could complement conventional treatments by adapting environments and daily tasks. Various social conditions support this perspective amid valid counterarguments.
