  • A clearer understanding of the connection between seborrheic dermatitis and EBDs is needed.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by epithelial barrier dysfunction, suggesting a potential link to other EBDs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between seborrheic dermatitis and the incidence of epithelial barrier diseases (EBDs).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective cohort study utilized a large US administrative claims database spanning January 2016 to June 2022.
  • Included were patients aged 18+ with at least one year of continuous enrollment and two or more unique medical visits.
  • Data from over 20 million patients were analyzed, with a mean follow-up of 3.46 years.

Main Results:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis was diagnosed in 3.62% of the patient cohort.
  • Positive associations were found between seborrheic dermatitis and numerous EBDs, including atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, psoriasis, rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, chronic spontaneous urticaria, pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid, rhinosinusitis, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, ocular allergy, and dry eye.
  • Negative associations were observed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pulmonary hypertension.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the epithelial barrier theory (EBT) as a common pathogenic factor in seborrheic dermatitis and various other EBDs.
  • Further research into the underlying mechanisms driving these associated diseases is warranted.
  • This study highlights seborrheic dermatitis as a potential indicator for increased risk of other epithelial barrier diseases.
