Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that significantly impacts social communication and behavioral challenges and is increasing in prevalence (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2023). Additionally, individuals with autism frequently have co-occurring mental health disorders, and a shortage of available and prepared providers exists to care for these needs (Bridgemohan et al., 2018). This study explored transformational leadership behaviors of specialized nurse practitioners (NPs) who care for children with autism and co-occurring mental health disorders. Emerging themes from this study highlighted an emerging subspecialty among NPs as developmental-behavioral mental health (DBMH) providers, which is a hybrid model of practice. The 17 NP participants shared experiences, concerns, and recommendations that intertwined with transformational leadership, with a main focus on the roles these specialized NPs serve, the education and training needs for practicing DBMH NPs, and the need to prepare NP students to serve the neurodiverse population in clinical practice.
