The proper interpretation of the experimental vibrational spectrum of Bi12SiO20 crystal is hindered by two particular factors. First, the crystal exhibits a high degree of optical activity. Second, the Raman scattering of cubic crystals is characterized by a peculiarity whereby vibrations of the A and E irreducible representations are essentially indistinguishable. We have applied a special experimental Raman scattering technique in order to separate the phonon modes of A and E types. The validity of our experimental results is confirmed by ab initio calculation of lattice dynamics and rigorous eigenvector analysis of vibrational modes. The phonon dispersion relations calculated along the symmetry directions of the Brillouin zone prove the dynamic stability of crystal lattice. The calculated density of phonon states allowed us to calculate the heat capacity, whose temperature dependence agrees with experimental data. Polarized Raman spectra calculated within the ab initio approach for various experimental geometries demonstrate reasonable agreement with their experimental counterparts. This finding validates the reliability of our theoretical treatment.

Raman Spectroscopy Instrumentation: Overview
The monochromatic laser source, typically using visible or near-infrared radiation, generates a highly focused beam of light. This light interacts with the molecules of the sample, scattering some of the light. Liquid and gaseous samples are usually tested in ordinary glass capillaries, while solids can be analyzed as powders packed in capillaries or as potassium...

Diffraction
Diffraction is the change in the direction of travel experienced by an electromagnetic wave when it encounters a physical barrier whose dimensions are comparable to those of the wavelength of the light. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths about as long as the distance between neighboring...
X-ray Diffraction of Biological Samples
According to Bragg's law, when X-rays strike the sample positioned on a stage, the rays are scattered by the electron clouds around the sample atoms. The X-ray diffraction or scattering is caused by constructive interference of the X-ray waves that reflect off the internal...
IR Spectroscopy: Molecular Vibration Overview
Stretching vibrations are vibrational motions that occur along the bond line, changing the bond length or distance between two bonded atoms. They are further distinguished as symmetric or asymmetric. In symmetric stretching, the...
