Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis01:24

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.3K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Ryan and Deci's Self-Determination Theory

15.0K
Self-Determination Theory (SDT), formulated by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, explains that human motivation is driven by three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met, individuals experience personal growth, intrinsic motivation, and overall well-being.
Autonomy is the need to feel in control of one's actions and decisions. For example, a student who chooses their research topic is likely to be more engaged and motivated than one who...

Self-Efficacy01:29

Self-Efficacy

183
Self-efficacy is the belief in one's capacity to organize and execute actions necessary to manage prospective situations. This belief significantly influences how individuals approach goals, tasks, and challenges across different domains of life.Psychological and Educational ImpactsIndividuals with strong self-efficacy are more resilient in the face of difficulties. They are more likely to adopt effective problem-solving strategies, persist through obstacles, and regulate emotions such as...

Sources of Self-Esteem II: Performance Feedback

177
Self-esteem is intricately tied to our perception of competence and our ability to exert control over our lives. One of the primary sources of this perception is performance feedback — the ongoing evaluation of our actions in terms of success and failure. According to Franks and Marolla (1976), people derive self-worth from experiencing themselves as causal agents, capable of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. This process nurtures a critical component of self-esteem:...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

2.4K
Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning,...

Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.
Motivation and Self-Determination
Motivation, the driving force behind behavior, plays a pivotal role at every stage of the change process. The research...

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Medical Education Research
  • Pedagogy

Background:

  • Self-directed learning (SDL) is crucial for developing lifelong learners.
  • Inspirational teaching (IPT) is hypothesized to foster independent SDL.
  • Understanding the IPT-SDL relationship is vital for optimizing health professions education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively investigate the relationship between inspirational teaching and self-directed learning among final-year health professions students.
  • To qualitatively explore students' experiences with inspirational teaching and their perceptions of self-directed learning.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative questionnaires and qualitative focus group discussions.
  • Final-year students from medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and dietetics/nutrition programs participated.
  • Data analysis included correlational analysis and thematic analysis of qualitative feedback.

Main Results:

  • A moderate positive correlation (r=0.46, p=0.001) was found between inspirational teaching and self-directed learning scores.
  • No significant differences in IPT and SDL scores were observed based on sex or academic program.
  • Qualitative findings indicated that students' perceptions of learning needs, learning environment, and teacher roles (reflection, feedback, role modeling) influenced SDL.

Conclusions:

  • Inspirational teaching is positively associated with self-directed learning in health professions students.
  • Teachers can inspire SDL through effective reflection, feedback, and by serving as role models.
  • Students' perception of learning needs and engagement in activities like patient contact and problem-solving significantly influence self-directed learning.
