Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

1.8K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Computer Vision
    • Metrology

    Background:

    • Phase unwrapping is crucial for 3D reconstruction but requires numerous fringe patterns.
    • Binocular structured light systems face challenges in measurement range due to overlapping camera fields of view.
    • High similarity in fringe patterns between cameras in binocular systems presents an opportunity for novel matching strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a phase unwrapping-free 3D measurement method for binocular structured light systems.
    • To leverage the high similarity of fringe patterns between cameras for improved matching.
    • To enhance the accuracy and efficiency of 3D measurement without complex calibration.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizes periodic segmented phase coding fringe for auxiliary matching.
    • Employs a weighted Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) algorithm to address segmented phase code matching as a sequence similarity problem.
    • Matches monotonic regions of wrapped phase using monotonicity and obtains partial disparity from wrapped phase values.
    • Determines disparity in jump areas using π phase shifting wrapped phase.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed method requires only three sinusoidal phase shifting images and two segmented phase coding images.
    • No periodic misalignment correction or projector calibration is necessary.
    • Experimental validation demonstrated effectiveness with a root mean square error of 0.052 mm for standard ball measurement.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed binocular stereo 3D measurement method effectively eliminates the need for phase unwrapping.
    • The approach successfully utilizes phase coding for robust auxiliary matching, even with similar fringe patterns.
    • This technique offers a simplified, accurate, and efficient solution for 3D measurement in structured light systems.
