Feasibility of an assistive technology follow-up protocol for mobility-related devices

Purpose:
The purpose for this feasibility study was to evaluate the usefulness and usability of a follow-up protocol for occupational therapists to utilise after client acquisition of mobility-related assistive technologies.
Materials And Methods:
This was a cross-sectional, mixed methods feasibility study involving creation of a new follow-up protocol guided by background research, refined using expert opinion, and evaluated with assistive technology (AT) users. Participants engaged in a session simulating the implementation of the protocol before providing feedback on it. Data from feedback surveys were utilised to determine the usefulness and usability of the created protocol. Ten current or former users of AT were included in the study. The mean age was 63 years old and the most common types of devices used were wheelchairs, walkers, and handrails/grab bars.
Conclusion:
Three main themes emerged: the AT follow-up protocol (ATFP) is user-friendly, the ATFP is useful for a targeted population, and AT contributes to well-being. Results indicate that the ATFP encompasses all necessary aspects of an evaluation, utilises universal language, and shows positive potential for individuals who are at risk for abandonment of their device or are actively in the device procurement process.
