Summary

Patient gift-giving during holidays, measured by the Gifts Received durINg Christmas Holidays (GRINCH) index, may reflect patient satisfaction. Higher GRINCH scores correlated with older doctors and male physicians, and with patients having chronic skin conditions.

Background:

Gift-giving is a common practice for healthcare providers, particularly during holidays.
Patient gratitude expressed through gifts can serve as an indicator of satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the Gifts Received durINg Christmas Holidays (GRINCH) index as a measure of patient satisfaction.
To explore factors influencing gift-giving in the doctor-patient relationship.

Main Methods:

A national survey conducted in Italy from December 2022 to January 2023.
Fifty dermatologists collected data on 659 gifts, including gift value, patient demographics, and medical conditions.
Analysis focused on the GRINCH index (gifts per dermatologist).

Main Results:

The mean GRINCH index was 13.7 gifts per dermatologist.
Higher GRINCH index values were associated with increased dermatologist age and years of professional experience.
Male dermatologists received more gifts on average than female colleagues.
Patients with chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne showed higher gifting rates.

Conclusions:

The study highlights the significance of the doctor-patient relationship in determining patient satisfaction.
Trust and long-term mutual understanding are foundational elements of patient satisfaction.
The GRINCH index offers a novel perspective on assessing patient satisfaction through gift-giving patterns.
