Developing Effective and Passionate Plastic Surgery Researchers: A Structured Pathway for Medical Students

Background:
A structured research pathway has been developed for medical students interested in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) that enhances research productivity, fosters skill development, cultivates passion, and promotes longitudinal, career-long interest in scientific inquiry.
Methods:
The article outlines a progressive, multistage pathway that guides medical students and their mentors through the key stages of engaging in PRS research. The pathway is structured around foundational research skills and mentorship and culminates in independent project ownership and peer mentorship.
Results:
The pathway is designed for plastic surgeons and trainees pursuing research related to plastic surgery, regardless of institutional or practice environment. The pathway begins with an intake assessment to match students with appropriate research opportunities based on their experience, interests, and availability. Students progressively develop the skills necessary for abstract submission, conference presentations, and publication. As they advance, they take on increasing responsibility, leading to project ownership and the opportunity to mentor junior students.
Conclusions:
This scaffolded research pathway equips medical students with the tools to become independent researchers and contributes to their academic success. By providing a clear pathway from early research involvement to leadership, the pathway strengthens students' residency applications and prepares them for future careers as surgeon-scientists. The program is adaptable and can be applied not only within PRS but also across other surgical specialties, allowing a broader audience to benefit from this structured approach to research education.
