Light-chain-restricted hematogones are a potential diagnostic pitfall for B-cell lymphoma

Background And Objective:
The aim is to differentiate light-chain-restricted hematogones (LCR-HGs) from B-cell lymphoma.
Materials And Methods:
We identified eight patients who underwent bone marrow (BM) flow cytometry (FLC) diagnosis or evaluation for lymphoma/multiple myeloma.
Results:
Among the eight cases, there are two chronic lymphocytic leukemia, one marginal zone lymphoma, one mantle cell lymphoma, one multiple myeloma, one hepar diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and one monomorphic epitheliotropic intestinal T-cell lymphoma, in whom FLC immunophenotypes of BM-aspirated specimens showed LCR-HGs.
Conclusion:
Failure to recognize LCR-HGs and diagnostic test interference associated with antibody-based therapies leads to erroneous diagnosis.
