Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Summary

This study analyzed over 2,500 Indian patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), finding that signet ring histology and poor performance status reduce survival, while monoclonal antibodies and multiple therapies improve it.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Limited data exists on the characteristics, treatment patterns, and survival outcomes of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in India.
  • Understanding these factors is crucial for improving patient care and developing targeted therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the presentation, practice patterns, survival, and factors influencing overall survival (OS) in Indian patients with mCRC.
  • To establish a baseline understanding of mCRC in the Indian population.

Main Methods:

  • A multi-institutional study involving 13 institutions across India.
  • Data from 2,520 patients with mCRC treated between January 2016 and May 2022 were analyzed.
  • Overall survival (OS) was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Main Results:

  • The median OS for the cohort was 18.7 months.
  • Signet ring (SR) histology and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 2 were associated with inferior OS (HR 1.30 and 1.37, respectively).
  • Receipt of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and exposure to more than two lines of therapy were associated with improved OS (HR 0.79 and 0.56, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • This analysis provides a baseline for clinicopathologic characteristics, molecular testing, and survival in Indian mCRC patients.
  • Impaired ECOG PS and SR histology negatively impact OS.
  • Monoclonal antibodies and multiple lines of therapy positively influence OS in this population.
