Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

2.6K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Concepts of Health and Illness

17.0K
Health is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit where an individual remains free from illness. Similarly, wellness is an active state, including living a lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. Physical health is critical for the overall well-being and can be affected by lifestyle, activity level, diet, and behavior. The highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental and universal human right. Consider Lisa, a fifteen-year-old born with congenital...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

2.0K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

14.1K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

286
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Summary

Complementary health approaches and integrative health (CHAIH) are increasingly used by occupational therapy (OT) practitioners, with deep breathing, sensory techniques, and yoga being most common. However, a knowledge-practice gap exists, indicating a need for evidence-based integration strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Complementary health approaches and integrative health (CHAIH) use is rising in the US.
  • The integration of CHAIH within occupational therapy (OT) practice is not well understood.
  • Understanding CHAIH prevalence and perceptions among OT practitioners is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of CHAIH use among occupational therapy practitioners.
  • To identify the most commonly utilized CHAIH therapies within OT.
  • To explore OT practitioners' perceptions and self-rated knowledge regarding CHAIH.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was administered to over 132,900 registered OT practitioners via NBCOT.
  • Data from 4,420 valid responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
  • Statistical analysis included tests for differences between proportions to compare groups.

Main Results:

  • A majority of surveyed OT practitioners reported using CHAIH in their practice.
  • Deep breathing, sensory techniques, and yoga were the most frequently reported CHAIH therapies.
  • Practitioners using CHAIH demonstrated significantly higher self-rated knowledge and more positive attitudes (p < .001).

Conclusions:

  • Significant integration of CHAIH exists within occupational therapy practice.
  • A notable gap persists between current CHAIH practice and practitioners' self-assessed knowledge levels.
  • Further research is needed to develop evidence-based guidelines for incorporating CHAIH into OT.
