A novel cobalt dodecaborate {Co3(H2O)3}2B12O24 (1) was first made under solvothermal conditions. It is a 3D neutral framework built by the sandwiched {B12O24}@{Co3(H2O)3}2 cluster, in which a crown-like B12O24 ({B12}) cluster is capped by two Co3O6(H2O)3 ({Co3}) units. The trinuclear {Co3} cluster is first found in borates. Due to the aggregation of Co2+ with a d-d transition, 1 has a broad absorption band from visible to near-infrared (NIR) regions. Photothermal conversion tests reveal that 1 exhibits promising photothermal conversion efficiency (27.3%) under the irradiation of a 1064 nm NIR light, furthermore with excellent cyclic stability. This work represents the first investigation of photothermal conversion performances in crystalline borates, highlighting the potential of borate-based materials for photothermal conversion applications.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...
